Forensic School Workshops – what are they ?

Forensic School Workshops are designed to promote and encourage a love of science in a school. A typical session involves students being taught some scientific skills which they can use to solve a ‘crime’ that has been committed in school.

Students work together to improve their knowledge of science by working together to solve scientific problems that reveal clues about who committed the ‘crime’.

The students enjoy the workshops for a variety of reasons including; doing a range of different activities, testing their scientific knowledge, learning about new scientific skills and generally having lots of fun. The workshops are packed with excitement. Students spend time with their friends whilst learning a new skill, it is something different and unusual. Students learn how to work collaboratively and also take the lead in different situations. What kinds of things happen in this workshop?

In a Forensic School Workshops the aim is to learn to expand your knowledge of science and learn to exercise in different ways that science can be used in a ‘real’ context! At the start of the workshop the forensic experts need to share the information about what is going to happen, identify how strong is the scientific knowledge of the students and set the overall theme for the day. The next step is when they start to practice their experiments and test their knowledge to take the correct steps to find the answer. The whole session can take up to 2 hours or more to complete depending on the size and ability of the group.
